Meet-up at Basic City

February 18, 2024

On the seasonably cool but sunny Sunday before Presidents Day, about 20 members of the Shenandoah Region had an informal meet-up at Basic City Brewing Company on the eastern side of Waynesboro.  Fun fact: the business is named after the former name of this area where two railroads, the Norfolk and Western and the Chesapeake and Ohio, crossed.  The town which grew up as a result was named Basic City.  In August 1923 Basic City and Waynesboro merged into one town.

A small group of Porsche pilots from the east side of the Blue Ridge did about an hour-long group drive to get there while those of us from the valley headed straight to the venue.  Pretty much no matter where a group of Porsches go, when they park together they always draw favorable attention.  While taking photos were taken for this story, another patron in the parking lot commented, “They sure are pretty aren’t they.”  He asked if we were a club and he was told who we were and that we were having a small social get-together.  But not everyone drove their P-car.  Our member Neil, originally from the other side of the pond drive, drove his newly imported 1998 Land Rover Defender XD Wolf that served in Afghanistan then redeployed back to the UK to take part in Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday party.  It looks rugged enough that driving the roads to and from Basic City would have been optional.

Pizza is always a popular lunch option at Basic City and club members enjoyed a few of those.  The loaded nachos were also very good and the charcuterie board proved to be more than one person could eat in one sitting.  Of course the selection of adult beverages was wide-ranging to please the groups’ personal preferences.  After a few hours of catching-up with friends, discussing our events planned for this year, and generally solving all the world’s problems, members began to make their way home.  Thank you to those members who came and we missed those members that couldn’t make it.  We hope to see you at the next Shenandoah Region event!
