The Shenandoah Region hosted our annual charity event to provide meals for those in need by supporting the Blue Ridge Food Bank in Charlottesville and Feed More in Richmond the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Members in Charlottesville met at Flow Porsche and members in Midlothian met at Euroclassics Porsche. The Midlothian event had a great deal of support from First Settlers Region members. Mike and Mary Ball of First Settlers and Harold Singh of Shenandoah assisted with registration.

The Charlottesville team were treated to lunch by the region at Tip Top Restaurant. The Midlothian group did a driving tour to Fine Creek Brewing Company in Powhatan, VA. Each region provided lunch for their respective members at Fine Creek.

The cumulative donations for both events was 1985 lbs of food and $7380 in checks. This is a new record for the region. I would like to thank each participant for their contribution to this outstanding cause. I would like to encourage those of you who were not able to make this event to please join us next year to allow us to continue to increase our annual donation.

Annual Picnic

The Shenandoah Region annual picnic was held on October 30 at the lovely and picturesque Harkaway Farm in Keswick, VA. The Barvarian Chef catered the event with an outstanding selection of German food. The event sold out and we had 100 members in attendance.

The weather provided us a high of 61° and no rain. Everyone had a terrific afternoon. We have traditionally had the annual picnic in August which has always been very warm. The end of October provided wonderful change to a crisp fall setting.

Steve Upman won the auto detailing raffle from Automotive Aesthetics. Dick Pitman, Ray Chung and Mike Early were awarded their Concours Class Winner trophies from RPM.

We would like to thank Mark Sackson for hosting the event at Harkaway Farm.

2021 Holiday Party, Michie Tavern

The Shenandoah Region hosted our annual Holiday Party at Michie Tavern after a one year Covid hiatus. Sam Morris, the Tavern general manager of 43 years, welcomed us back with an outstanding evening that everyone enjoyed. Our charity for this event was the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots. We were wonderfully surprised to have two active duty Marines join us to accept the Toys for Tots donations our members so graciously provided.

We filled Michie Tavern to capacity for our annual Holiday Party. We were very fortunate to have Bill Blodgett celebrate his Birthday with us that evening. Bill was rewarded with a full region chorus of “Happy Birthday to You”!

Tech Session at Detail Driven – April 23, 2022

by: John Odden, August 28, 2021

The Executive Director of MAAP, Cole Scrogham, invited the members of the Shenandoah Region to a tech session at their facility in Harrisonburg, VA. We had an excellent turnout for an outstanding overview of what is involved in a Porsche pre-purchase inspection, commonly referred to as a PPI. When considering the purchase of a pre-owned Porsche, many levels of uncertainty exist. Was the car a garage queen, a daily driver, a track car or a weekend pleasure vehicle. How many previous owners? Are all of the maintenance records available? Does a scan of the ECU indicate any over-revs and if so, in which gears. Is the vehicle properly represented with it’s history and documentation relative to origin. These are all questions we anguish over when considering a pre-owned Porsche. Anything overlooked can have a major impact on the actual and proper valuation of the car.

Cole broke down the components of a proper PPI. Having had a lifelong exposure to Porsches places him at the level of expert. He explained the basics of paint, suspension, interior and engine. There are factory welds on the front fender that are an indicator of a fender replacement if ground off. He shared that certain model years of 911’s will not show consistent paint thickness on the doors compared to the other body components. Cole noted that a paint thickness meter is an important tool, however, one must know the historical methods Porsche used over the years so as not to ascertain a deviation as a problem.

New Member Dinner Party
by: John Odden, President

With the lack of events during the pandemic, many new members have not had an opportunity to join any club activities. Every member who joined from July 2019 on was invited to meet the board members and gain insight into what we do as a club.

The event was held at the Ashcroft community club house in Charlottesville. We had 45 members and spouses join us for a spectacular evening which included hors d’ oeurves, dinner and dessert. Bacio Mediterranean Cuisine catered the event and provided an outstanding array of delectable dishes which received rave reviews.

A special thanks goes to Gary and Janie Hunter for allowing the Shenandoah Region to hold our event at the community club house and all of the assistance they provided.
