Flashback to June 9-11, 2023
Led once again by southwest Virginia native Tim Foster, members of the Shenandoah Region traveled to Marion, Virginia, where they convened on Friday evening to share a pleasant dinner before the weekend’s activities.
Saturday morning’s drive departed Marion for Tazewell, Virginia, on Route 16, also known as the Back of the Dragon. This 32-mile route has over 400 curves. There was a major motorcycle gathering in Tazewell that weekend but the roads were still very open and shared by all. The return trip over the twisty country back roads of the Back of the Dragon was just as exhilarating.
After lunch we drove to Grayson Highlands State Park where members enjoyed scenic mountain vistas and learned about the region’s geography from Tim. Then the drive went through Tim’s hometown of Damascus before returning to Marion. After a group dinner, some members enjoyed a Fleetwood Mac tribute band concert at the Lincoln Theater.
The next morning members departed for home. One group took a scenic route back along the Blue Ridge Parkway through the Peaks of Otter.
Thanks again to Tim for organizing this very special event. Those who participated agreed it is definitely well-worth the drive from our area to the Back of the Dragon for this top driving experience. Be sure to join us next time we plan this drive!
