Welcoming Spring in Porsche Style
After a reception at Porsche Charlottesville the night before, Shenandoah Region members drove one of two routes on the Michael Scott Tucker Spring Fling Driving Tour, both ending at King Family Vineyards. The tour is named in honor of a good friend to all and member of our region whom we just lost after a brave fight with cancer. Turnout was fantastic with 48 cars registered for the drive.
Randy Johnson designed the southern route through western Fluvanna, southern and western Albemarle counties and Dan Graff laid out the northern route through northeastern Albemarle, southwestern Greene, and western Albemarle counties. Both routes were about sixty miles long and incorporated a variety of twisty bits, elevation changes and scenic views. Saturday morning dawned cool and cloudy but with the promise of beautiful weather for the driving tours and our destination at the car corral at King Family Vineyards. Given the strong turnout, we almost overwhelmed the staging parking lot behind Porsche Charlottesville. After the 9:25 AM driver’s safety briefing the two route groups headed off behind their multiple drive leads at two-minute intervals.
Upon arriving at our destination the folks at King Family Vineyards allowed us to park our beautiful Porsches in an area normally off-limits. There, we held an informal People’s Choice Concours much to the delight of the vineyard’s visitors.
Many thanks to the group leads and sweepers (Billy Bennett, Richard Tabor, Alvin Ago, Bates McLain, Jon Aronson, Ray Chung, Bob McCabe, Steve Johnson, Michael Murphy, Brycen Hudock , Jonathan Perelman and Steve Upman) for their time and efforts preparing for this successful event.
